Here's to a new decade...

2010?? Really?? Wow...I can still remember vividly when the Y2K (2000) frenzy was upon us and in a couple hours it will be a start of a new decade...It's amazing how time flies, right??

Many events happen in 1 day and sometimes it is hard for us to recap it, so to summarize an entire decade is kind of blurry for me but there are some life changing/altering events that took place during this past decade that I need to mention in this last blog of '09.

Life altering moments of last decade: May 2001: 10 year mark of my baptism! The first major commitment I made with the help of my amazing parents. It's a decision I have never and will never regret! :) Thank you Jesus for allowing me to be part of the family. :)

June 2001:
I graduated high school in 3 years!!!! :) It was a struggle and almost did not make it, but by the grace of God...I did!!!! To have all my close friends and precious family there at the graduation was unforgettable. Little did I know this would be the last major event the love of my life, my grandfather, would attend...

August 2001: Universidad Adventista de Las Antillas (UAA). It was my first time away from home for such a long period of time!! I was in the Caribbean and my parents on the East Coast...we were miles and miles apart but I made AMAZING friends at UAA whom I still adore til this day. Every time I think about UAA, I get super nostalgic because of all the great memories that were made. Love you guys!

September 2001: Everyone in the world knows what a morbid day that that we will never forget. I still remember I was in Puerto Rico and watching the planes crash into the twin towers and it was horrid. Then I heard about the pentagon and instantly called my parents...everyone around the world had the same idea because all the phone lines were clogged and we couldn't get through to the United States. Needless to say, our lives have been changed forever. RIP to all victims of 9/11...our prayers are with the families who still feel the void.

November 2001:
The love of my life, my maternal abuelo, passed away in New Jersey. This too was another life altering moment that I will NEVER forget. He was my heart, my angel, my confidant...simply my abuelo querido. I was in Puerto Rico and felt hopeless because of the distance and I will still remember the phone call and the friends who hugged me endlessly. I will never forget that either. Thank you guys... Our family has never been the same without him, but we cannot wait for the Lord's return so we can see our angel again. :) :)

June 2005:
I got engaged to the love of my life, Hector Perla!! It was a scavenger hunt around Washington, DC and it was absolutely beautiful! Of course I said yes!!!! :)

January 2006: This day I married my best friend- the love of my life. Hector Samuel Perla and I were placed in each other's lives for one reason and one reason only...for us to spend the rest of our lives together. January 1, 2006 was truly a day to remember! We had planned so much for this day but in reality it was only the 1st day of the rest of our life together. Our wedding was beautiful with all our close friends and family, but what's more beautiful is the days and years we have spent by each others side as husband and wife. New Years Day would never be the same again because of our beautiful anniversary!!! :) Yay! I love you fatty watty! xox

March 2006: Our beloved Alisha E. Ventura passed away tragically and unexpectedly at the tender age of 22. RIP Lish...we miss you a lot and cannot wait for that blessed day where we can give you a big hug again. Love you pookie.

May 2007:
I finally graduated with my undergraduate degree from Columbia Union College!!! It took 3 different schools, lots of lost credits, but by the grace of GOD, I did it!! This was also one of the happiest days in my life because of the friends and family that accompanied me and supported me all along the way!

May 2007:
I got my first job out of college at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) whose mission is to develop the next generation of Latino leaders! Visit our website at

January 2009: OBAMA. First African American President in the history of the United States. Need I say more?

If I were to write about all the AMAZING events of the past decade, I would need at least 50 pages. God is so good, merciful, amazing, beautiful, fatherly, and awesome!

When I think about the different things I have come to learn in 2009 and throughout the decade, a few come to mind right now.

(a few) Things I have learned:

1. God is
very detailed...Just like the Bible says, if He cares about the small sparrow who fell off the tree (paraphrasing), He cares about all our details! I've come to realize that sometimes random things happen all for a reason...even down to the smallest detail. It happens for a reason. God is so caring and truly wants the best for us at all times!

2. God sometimes answers our prayers by answering someone elses. I don't know if I am making myself clear...but sometimes when we pray for one specific thing, He answers it by answering someone else's specific prayer but in turn that person's answered prayer will somehow eventually effect ours. It sounds confusing...I know, but once you experience it, It is a indescribable.

3. In marriage, it's all about compromising! :) Anyone else who is married knows exactly what I mean...

4. The older you get, unfortunately the more impossible it is to be able to maintain 100% all the friendships you've had over the years (because of the less time we have as adults). Some people come by for a little bit, make a wonderful impact and move on...and some stay forever.

5. These past few years I have realized the love I have for my beautiful mother and my husband has grown immensely.

6. I have realized that God specifically places different friends in each of our lives for a different purpose. I read a poem 2 summers ago and continue to think about it...It speaks about how we have some friends who are specifically there to wipe our tear, while another one is our shopping buddy, while another is the one who motivates us to continue studying, while another is one who intensely helps us on our walk with God, while another is there to just listen, while another is there just to give you those amazing hugs...God sends us these friends who are angels. Thank you God for friends!

7. I have realized that 2 people with 2 different mindsets can still be close friends because of the common ground they find.

8. I have realized that we are truly, truly living in the last days on this earth. When we were little, we would always hear our parents say it and we would hear it at church, but it's more true now than ever before: He is coming soon! Hallelujah!

We have to be ready!
Like I mentioned earlier in this post, many things happen in a day...imagine all the things that happen in 1 year, 5 years and 1 decade?? Wow...what will this new decade hold? Will we see the return of our Lord and Savior? Hope so, but only God knows that. Will we loose more friends and family tragically? I pray not. Will the economy continue to flip flop? I am sure. So many questions, but in Matthew 6:34 it says: "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

This new year, this new decade will hold many new events (some pleasant and some not so pleasant), but one thing I know for sure is that we are 1 day, 1 year closer to the return of our loving Savior!!! God is the god of the impossible my friends...We just have to have faith and believe. Let's remain united as friends and family and strive for the same goal: to live in Heaven eternally with our precious and Holy Father.

May this new year, 2010, and the new decade be full of abundant blessings for you and your
loved ones!!! May God continue to protect and bless you!

Happy 2010 to you and yours!

Con mucho Amor,

Nissy (and Hector)
